Designer Spotlight with Joyce Schiska: Before & After

Sunroom After

Sunroom Before

With over 30 years experience in residential and commercial design, Joyce Schiska ASID, RID (owner and lead designer of Joyce Schiska Designs) can recount many of her favorite projects, but one in particular, touched her heart forever. Mrs. Shirley Haspel, a Texas transplant from Louisiana due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina, came to Dallas to create a home of her own, and ended up with a new-found friendship.

For 6 months after moving to Texas from her high-rise condo overlooking Lake Pontchartrain, Mrs. Haspel lived with rental furniture before deciding it was time to at least stay here while she decided whether or or not to go back to her home in New Orleans. Thru a client, Joyce was introduced to Shirley and they quickly became friends through their mutual fondness of quality antiques which they scoured for at local consignment shops and re-sale stores to maintain a budget for her year’s stay.

"Mrs. Haspel has exquisite taste in antiques so she really kept me on my toes in finding quality pieces at great prices," says Joyce.

Living Room After

After a year, she decided to stay in Dallas and sold her condo in New Orleans. Shirley and Joyce mixed many of Shirley's treasured antiques with what they had purchased here in Dallas - resulting in a beautifully warm and inviting home for her. The first painting they hung was of Walter, her late and beloved husband, over the fireplace

The major changes made during the renovation were to the sunroom - which was originally a porch - transformed with built-ins and became a great space for playing cards. The master bathroom was universally designed for a safer and more functional space. Here's a look at the project's before and after shots.
Thank you Joyce, for sharing your story with us!
