Designer Margaret Chambers on the Art of Antiquing: Since I took my first trip to Europe in my early 20's I fell in love with the beautiful antiques that filled the quaint hotels and the treasured pieces of centuries old furniture that stood guard in the historic castles I visited. I knew then, that my life would be a journey in pursuit of finding unique antiques that charmed me wherever I went....
And when it comes to feathering your nest, it's important to seek out furnishings, decor and accessories that speak to your heart and ignite your inner interior designer.... while at the same time, carefully considering the value of each investment. Fine antiques - especially 18th and 19th century furniture, accessories and paintings - are steadily rising in value each year... and for good reason. These types of antiques have become valuable symbols of the past due in part to their rare, handmade art form and the expert craftsmen who hand-created each piece.

Thanks to a population that is about 85% traditional in their taste level - the value of antiques rises an average 5% each year - creating a continuous market for antiques, says trusted estate dealer and 35-year industry veteran Ruth Taylor. And the evidence is clear: Ten years ago I purchased a tortoiseshell tea caddy for $1,600 (a bit expensive in my mind then)... and recently, I discovered a very similar one at an upscale antique shop that retailed at $8,750. A beautiful return on my investment, I'd say.

Tips & Guidelines for Antique Investments:
1. Look for pieces in near perfect condition
2. Request written records and proof of authenticity on antiques more than $5,000
3. Buy the best you can afford
4. Keep your antiques in mint condition
