Evening Prayers - Shannon Neihus
Art-lovers: head to Ross Akard Gallery at the Fairmont tomorrow evening for the opening of Mercy by artist Shannon Niehus's - which runs through October 9.
About the event:
Mercy, opening September 9, runs through October 9, 2010. The show celebrates nine oil paintings ranging from 48 x 72 inches to 96 x 144 inches. Embedded into this evolving exhibition is a live performance—one night only—on September 17 at 7pm at the Fairmont Venetian Room. An unveiling of a video installation at the gallery will also take place on that night. The Ecstasy, produced by Shannon Niehus and directed by Jonathan Taylor, a company member of Kitchen Dog Theater, offers a 40-minute narrative in three acts and incorporates a soft sculpture as one of the main characters in the performance. Musicians create the voice of this nonhuman character through flute, violin, and drum solos across the silent movements of other character actors on stage. The video art installation in the gallery space records the same narrative, however, offers the first-person perspective of the sculpture.
About Mercy:
Crime and Tolerance, Passage, Evening Anarchy, Evening Prayers, and The Titration Between Repugnance and Poise—just some of the titles of paintings in Mercy—provide the viewer with the ongoing reciprocities of ecstasy explored visually. This particular series, which includes nonfigurative oil on masonite paintings, is a departure from her figurative paintings in previous work. “Exploring a vacancy of humanity and then resurrecting the figure through live performance has triggered a fading in and out of human presence throughout the series,” Niehus explains. The concept of resurrection becomes a point of intrigue for the viewer of the video installation as the artist implemented this site specific piece for her viewers to see, The Ecstasy while ascending a quiet escalator. The Ecstasy is being documented by two-time Emmy-winning national news photojournalist and Sundance-winning producer of TV Junkie, Rick Kirkham. The video documentary will be on display through the entire Mercy solo show.
