The DG Team is all smiles this week as the brand new, 19th edition of Dallas-Fort Worth Design Guide is hot off the presses! And if you've gotten your hands on one, chances are you were mesmerized by the crisp, clean cover; The modern white bed, yellow throw pillows and slate grey walls, courtesy of Catherine Dolen & Associates Interior Design, is the perfect design for ushering us into Spring 2011.
We caught up with Mrs. Dolen herself to get the details of the making of this stunning master bedroom suite that made our cover...
"The design objective for this hi-rise master suite was to create a space that could take advantage of the excitement of hi-rise living but could also provide a wonderful retreat and refuge from the outside world. The fabulous view is always available, but one can simply draw the silk draperies and a restful calm envelops the room.
One is introduced to the suite through an entry alcove that is lighted with custom horn sconces. The spa-like bath is immediately on the right. The spacious bedroom is totally open to the city view and has a private terrace. The walk-through master closet leads to a small, elegant dressing room, also with a view.
The transitional style of the suite is created by balancing contemporary design elements with more traditional ones. Contemporary elements such as the bath vanities and art glass pendants blend easily with the traditionally styled armoire in the bedroom, the antique rugs, and the dressing room’s crystal chandelier. Many of the elements, such as the canopy bed and the chair and ottoman, have elements of both styles. An eclectic mix of furnishings, art, and accessories allows for an easy and relaxed living space.

The color scheme is neutral and is implemented with the use of warm gray and soft white tones used in various ways throughout the space. These serene neutrals create a restful, quiet environment, perfect for a bedroom retreat. Because of the intense visual stimulation provided by the view from this 18th floor suite, most of the larger surfaces in the space were kept calm with little pattern. The bed pillows, made from a brilliant yellow Fortuny fabric, provide a burst of color that adds energy to the design. This sunny yellow tone is repeated throughout the space in subtle ways.
Many of the furnishings were conceptualized by the designer especially for the suite and manufactured by the designer’s custom fabricators. The custom canopy bed and bedside chests are made of bleached, dyed, and polished ribbon mahogany. The upholstered velvet chair and ottoman were also specifically created for this space as were the entry console table, the bench and all of the soft furnishings and draperies.

“We are all bombarded daily with the stresses of life. An individual’s surroundings, whether at home or work, should not contribute to that stress. I believe that every space should nurture the people that use it and provide a source of serenity, enabling each person to make the most of living. Space, light, texture, color, and all the other principles and elements of design are the tools that I use to achieve that goal for each client and project.”
