Texas Sun & Shade announces its 25th anniversary celebration of being in business!
September marks the anniversary that Ben and Gudrun Skoldeberg, a husband and wife team, brought retractable awning systems to Austin and Central Texas. In 1987, the Skoldebergs, along with one business partner, saw an opportunity to expand their already successful awning business, located in northern Sweden, to a new market with much climatic need for these systems - and Texas Sun & Shade was born.
“The initial challenge in Austin was educating people on retractable awnings and why they are a wise investment,” says Ben Skoldeberg. While awning business flourished in Sweden, the depressed local economy and the unfamiliarity of the products proved to be hardships for the Skoldebergs as they sold only one mini blind for $100 during the initial 5 months. Continuous education and endurance ultimately prevailed, and in 1990 the Skoldebergs bought out their Swedish business partner’s share of Texas Sun & Shade.

In 1999, Texas Sun & Shade outgrew its original 2,000 square foot showroom and the Skoldebergs built a 5,000 square foot complex in Bee Caves, Texas, to accommodate the expanding business and staff.
Since that time, retractable sun control systems have grown in popularity among homeowners, builders, architects and designers alike. Adding value and functionality to design, Texas Sun & Shade has grown from that $100 mark to a multi-million dollar business. The Skoldebergs attribute their ever-growing success to their strong business philosophy: “We want to be the company in Central Texas that has the best customer service and the best products. We want to show people that we will take care of our customers and their needs.”
In September, the Skoldebergs are excited to host an official anniversary celebration event which will include their staff, friends, family, clients, and all of the business partners who have contributed to the success of Texas Sun & Shade over the past 25 years.
