Like many East coast artists of the time, Emile Gruppe spent time at Cape Ann in Massachusetts. The mix of artistic talents in the area ranged from traditional to modern and included artists Childe Hassam (1859-1935), Edward Hopper (1882-1967) and John Sloan (1871-1951). Gruppe's first visit to the area (Cape Ann) occurred after seeing the work of 2 artists, William Lester Stevens and Frederick J. Mulhaupt at the National Academy of Design in 1925. In Bass Rocks, Gruppe skillfully depicts a rocky outcrop in a coastal scene battered by a series of large waves. In this scene, the viewer could feel the energy of the crashing waves as Gruppe brings us to the water’s edge. His work may be found in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the White House.
