Painted ceilings have this similar feel of a negative of a photograph. It's flipped from colorful walls and white celings to white/light walls and colorful ceilings. It's startling in a delightful way.
Colored ceilings are great for creating the illusion of there being more architectural detail, dimension and light than there actually is in a space.
With the holidays around the corner and a hot, busy summer behind us, it’s a great time of the year to begin considering our seasonal décor. J. Douglas Design gives us some wonderful tips on how to freshen up and sprinkle some holiday spirit in our living spaces; especially during this time of year when many families invite their friends and family into their homes to celebrate special occasions and enjoy the time together.
Living areas are the common gathering space in the home, whether they are a formal or more casual room. Many homes have two or more living areas to accommodate one space for both purposes; and one of them is often referred to as a den. These living areas are many times connected to the dining room, which is also a very important part of your home’s entertaining area. Living areas are of great significance in day-to-day living; we look to this space to rest and relax, and recharge from our busy lives.
Whether you are choosing décor for a formal living area or a more casual den – it is a special space in your home that will be shared with many, and should reflect your personal style and flair. Here are some tips to make your living spaces comfortable and stylish.
Focus on seating. The living area is a place where people unwind, relax and have conversations with one another. If you have a large area to work with, sectionals are great for this as they wrap comfortably around the room and allow people to sit facing one another. Perhaps you are working with more limited space, and if this is the case, then a sofa and some chairs work well just fine, positioned around a coffee table as typical. If you have a spacious room, a very popular and unique arrangement is to have two loveseats facing one another with a coffee table in between. Just remember that whatever size room you have, try to allow for guests to face each other if possible and maximize your seating with the space you have. If there is additional and awkward space in your room, consider decorative occasional tables or ottomans to fill out the design with usable pieces that will be nice conversation pieces as well.
Sometimes artists seemingly become artists upon happenstance. Those are always inspiring stories. One of the beauties of art is its diversity. Outrageous Gallery is one of many Texas showrooms home to many unique, extraordinary art pieces and artists. Myra Burg is one such artist who stumbled upon her passion.
Wanting a change from practicing architecture, and realizing my Didgeridoo at home was more an art piece than musical instrument, I wrapped a companion piece, and named it "The Quiet Oboe." I fell in love with the warmth of wrapped fiber on the cylindrical form. Each tube is coated with adhesive, and individually wrapped, top to bottom, with sumptuous fiber of varying sheen and texture.
Slocum Street Style 2012 was once again a great success. Yesterday evening, Slocum Street brimmed with design enthusiasts and curious others strolling along leisurely from showroom to showroom in the twilight of the evening. Each showroom was full of the bustle of lively conversation.

They helped soothe the growl of people’s stomachs by serving light bites and drinks. Also featured in each showroom were individual raffle prizes for people in attendance. For those with bigger appetites, there were food trucks located on a few street corners filled with the smells of mouth-watering food.
