Nooks and Crannies: Things That Make Up a Home

Hobbs Ink, Janet Hobbs, radial trellis, Design Guide, online editorial, niches

An architect from California, Berry Berkus, used to say, “humans love arches.” It’s true, we do. But, we love all special places. We love attic rooms with slanted ceilings, we love window seats, bay windows and clever niches. No one ever walked into a rectangular room with a flat ceiling and gushed, “Oh, I LOVE this space!” (unless it had a special feature like a window wall or something). So, remember to ask your architect or building designer to give you some special places, some special touches. Don’t just build a home that flows well and is attractive from the street. Those things are important, but create something that surprises you and makes your home feel distinctive once you get inside or when you encounter the backyard.

Spacious closets have become a vital space in the bedroom and have even, at times, become a key selling point when investing in a home. Gone are the days where homeowners and potential home buyers are satisfied with a closet that can hold a single rack and a couple of shelving units. Now there are renovations and ways to transform a cluttered closet that barely fits your necessities- into a customized closet with ample room for organization.

Our Favorite Design Blogs

The wealth of online resources has changed the face of our design community. It was not that long ago that our daily exposure to design trends was based on our regional resources, so our design community was just that… regional. Exposure to national and international design trends was limited to a select group of uber successful designers, while the rest of the community anxiously waited each month to turn the pages of national publications such as Architectural Digest. Now that so much valuable information is readily available online, our design community has no borders. Now in combination with print, homeowners and design professionals alike can get up to the minute ideas, inspiration and sources through leading daily design blogs. For example, The Design Guide receives emails and requests from as far away as Dubai and Greece in search of resources, and we communicate via Facebook and twitter with Designers everywhere. We love to share the latest ideas, inspiration images and sources available in Texas, and in turn we have a list of blogs we are following that keep us informed from around the globe. Here are just a few of the blogs and online resources that our team loves to follow. Let us know your favorites.

Camp Barnabas, A Labor of Love by Pam Kelley

Camp Barnabas   Camp Barnabas   Camp Barnabas

This year I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Camp Barnabas, a nonprofit camp that provides life-changing opportunities for children with special needs. This beautiful and loving organization serves over 1,300 special needs children who travel from all regions of the U.S. each summer. For those of us who had the life-changing experience of summer camp as children and want our own children to share in similar experiences, Camp Barnabas provides just that for children with mental or physical challenges and/or chronic illnesses. A Christian summer camp, Camp Barnabas was established to give children who are faced with incredibly adult challenges year-round the opportunity to experience life as a kid. Each summer children with special needs come to be participants in life rather than observers of a life that they cannot participate in.

The "Money Shot"

Rogers-Ford Architecture

Photography by Image By Design 2
Rogers-Ford Architecture & Interior Design

Today's homeowners are actively researching to find Interior Designers and showrooms that can provide them with design expertise as well as efficient and professional service. To find those resources, homeowners are searching the web and flipping through the pages of design publications. The myriad of images all begin to look the same until that one image pops out and strikes a cord. At the Design Guide we like to call this image the “money shot.” It is that single image that stops the buyer from continuing to flip pages and causes them to rethink the possibilities for their own space. As a publisher we see thousands of images a year, and the common thread among all the “money shots” is that they have been professionally photographed.
